about
In Watership Down an outskirter is a rabbit with no particular social standing, largely because it has nothing to offer the warren. They eat last and least best. They are forced out of an overcrowded warren even in inclimate weather. They are bullied by the Owsla, the ruling, paramilitary class. Every culture in human history has its own outskirter population. What we choose to do with those “on the outside” says a lot about our moral compass as individuals and a society. I see some people’s reaction to illegal immigrants, particularly from Latin American countries, at odds with the expectations simple human decency would demand. As people of faith, we have to find some balance between political realities and how we treat the children of God.
