Adams’ rabbits are brutal -- to their enemies, rabbit and non-rabbit alike, and even to members of their own warren. They tear and claw and bite with mutilating malice. They behave with all the savageness of more ferocious beasts. Humans are capable of the same sort of physical and emotional brutality towards each other. We are most susceptible to cannibalizing violence when we are put into situations where we cannot properly empathize with the viewpoint on the other side. In those moments, it is easy to focus on the perceived difference in perspective rather than the commonness of our humanity. One desperate example is seen in the conflict between protestors and riot police. Humans on two sides of a picket line, both with jobs and a purpose, who in the heat of the moment lose equilibrium on the intrinsic and Godly value of the individuals opposite them. Christ was brutalized for a similar lack of understanding.
